Best Thermostat Settings for Indian Summers

Published on May 3, 2026 | By Coolcare Editorial Team

Ideal AC temperature

With summer temperatures in Northern India regularly crossing 40°C, air conditioners run round-the-clock. Many people immediately drop their AC temperature to 16°C or 18°C hoping it will cool the room faster. However, this is a misconception that wastes massive amounts of electricity.

1. The 24°C Recommendation

According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in India, the default temperature setting for room air conditioners is regulated at 24°C. Our bodies are comfortable at this temperature, and it allows the compressor to cycle off periodically, saving up to 24% in electricity consumption compared to running it at 18°C.

2. How Temperature Settings Work

Setting your AC to 16°C does not make it blow colder air; it only means the compressor will run continuously without stopping until it reaches that extreme target temperature. If the ambient temperature outside is 42°C, it is virtually impossible for a standard residential AC to reach 16°C, causing your system to overheat.

3. Use Ceiling Fans in Tandem

Running a ceiling fan alongside your AC set to 24°C or 25°C circulates the cold air more efficiently. The wind chill effect makes the room feel 2 degrees cooler than it actually is, allowing you to stay comfortable at a higher thermostat setting.

Want to optimize your AC's efficiency?

Book a general tune-up or a power pressure jet wash to clean dust blocks from the coils, restoring maximum airflow and lowering power consumption.
